Lace vs. Silk
The goal of high-quality hair replacement is always to be as inconspicuous as possible. After all, no woman suffering from hair loss wants to be accosted by her hairpiece or wig. The desired naturalness is best achieved with montures made of lace or silk - but which of the two solutions is the better one?
This question cannot be answered in such a general way, because it depends on the wishes of the wearer and her preferences or demands. That's why I'm going to present both types of lace in detail here, so that you can make an informed decision.
What actually is Lace?
"Lace" is the English word for tulle - that is, a very thin fabric made of polymers in honeycomb form. It comes in different thicknesses and colors so that it can meet different requirements. The so-called HD Lace, for example, is particularly fine and transparent, so that it remains invisible even in close-ups in film and television. The disadvantage of this type of lace is its sensitivity - it is therefore not suitable for women with hair loss who wear their hair replacement every day. In this case, a more stable lace should be used.
To judge the strength or thickness of a lace, the unit of measurement "denier" is used. The lower the denier number - i.e. about 15 - the finer but also more delicate the tulle.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Lace
In a topper or wig made of Lace, the hair is directly linked to the fabric. Hair replacement from Lace is therefore very thin and light and does not wear on. Especially in the summer, this can be much more comfortable than a wig with a silktop. The disadvantage of Lace, however, is that the honeycomb-like structure and the hair knots do not look like natural scalps.
A little trickery can be done here, for example by bleaching the knots on all dark hair colors. It is also possible to sew other fabrics under the lace or wear a skin-colored wig cap to make the parting more inconspicuous. However, this requires some effort and the wig is not ready to wear immediately.
What actually is Silk?
"Silk" is the English term for silk. The type of silk used in the manufacture of toppers and wigs is extremely thin and available in various colors - from white to dark brown.
To achieve the realistic scalp effect, a thin layer of silk is placed over the lace, and the hair is meticulously pulled through this layer as well. This is significantly more time-consuming than simply tying the hair and is therefore also more expensive than hair replacements that consist only of lace.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Silk
The biggest advantage of hairpieces and wigs with silktop is the absolutely realistic parting area. Due to the silk over it, it seems as if the hair grows directly from the scalp. No one will suspect here that it will not be your own hair.
But as with any type of hair replacement, the Silktop has disadvantages. For one thing, it is - as already mentioned - a bit more expensive than pure lace wigs or toppers. For another, a Silktop hairpiece or wig consists of several layers - this is the only way to achieve a realistic parting. However, this has the consequence that the outfit is a bit thicker and does not fit as tightly as a lace top on the head.
Lace vs. Silk - what is suitable for whom?
Whether Lace or Silk is more suitable depends on one's own preference and on the other hand on the general conditions of the individual. Women who are prone to heavy sweating could possibly be happier with a Lace outfit because of its lightness. Lace might also be more suitable for women who have a pointed or oval head shape, as the outfit conforms to the head shape even more than Silk.
Silktop is suitable for women who place a lot of importance on a realistic parting. In this, Silktop is truly unbeatable and outweighs the disadvantages for many women.
